CHI 2005 is the premier international conference for human-computer interaction, sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery. As the premier society of professionals in interactive systems, ACM is responsible for shaping a “safe” future. Recent events and developments have scared many people away from technology. For example, in parts of the world people are reluctant to fly, and in other parts they are reluctant to provide personal information to be allowed to fly. Technology should be designed in such a way that it reinforces a sense of community and allows people to feel safe again. One of the major challenges to the HCI community is developing complex interactive information systems. Hence, CHI 2005 will focus on the relationships between Safety, Technology, and Community.

Events UPA 2005: Bridging Cultures   Montreal, Quebec, Cananda, 2005-06-27 07:30:00 - 2005-07-01 18:00:00
Contrasting cultures can create rich learning experiences, but they also create the potential for miscommunication and misunderstandngs. Growth happens when we are able to bridge the cultures and utilize the strengths of each. As usability professionals, we are uniquely qualified to "be the bridge" between cultures. Our skills of observation help us identify the needs of different groups. This can help us translate the needs of one group into the results created by another group. We often do this in our work by observing and understanding the needs of our user community, and then becoming the "bridge" that translates those needs into requirements that can be understood and acted upon by designers, business owners, and technical teams.

These conferences are both an expansion and a re-direction of previous Unified Modeling Language (UML) conferences, and replace that series of conference for 2005 and beyond. Model-driven system development has long been used in the development of complex hardware systems. It is becoming more prevalent in complex software or combined hardware and software systems development as methodologies and tools become available that can manipulate software models from very abstract concepts through refinement and testing. The MoDELS series of conferences is the premier venue for the exchange of innovative technical ideas and experiences relating to model-driven approaches in the development of software-based systems.
